FAQ
Q) What impact wrench do you recommend?
A) Use a 1/2″ drive impact wrench with a minimum fastening torque of 750 ft-lbs. (You can also use a hand ratchet, preferably with an extension, to operate your SELF® Load Binder.)
Q) I don’t own an impact wrench. Can I operate my SELF Binder with a drill?
A) No. A drill does not provide sufficient torque. Also, because a drill does not back off after it meets resistance, it presents the potential for injury. Use either an 1/2″ drive high torque impact wrench or a hand ratchet to operate your SELF Load Binder.
Q) How often should the binder be greased?
A) The binder comes pre-greased with Chevron UltiPlex, a full synthetic grease. Greased is best applied with the binder fully disassembled. Check your binder for grease after 1-2 months of use, and base your frequency of maintenance on your level of use.
Q) Is it OK to use a hammer to set my wedging tab?
A) No. The wedging tab should be set by briefly rattling the impact wrench while simultaneously holding the wedging tab in place against the barrel. Note that if you have over-tightened the chain, the barrel can no longer turn enough to set the wedge. You may need to back the binder off very slightly, then re-attempt to set your tab.
Q) My binder doesn’t seem to be getting the chain tight.
A) The SELF Load Binder must be operated using an impact wrench with a minimum fastening torque of 750ft-lbs. If your wrench meets these specifications but is not getting the chain as tight as it used to, ensure that your battery is fully charged. Note that your battery/wrench combo can also lose torque capacity with age and extended use.
